#4 geek markets canberra

8th june 2024
canberra, australia

Now this one was chaos. Imagine a tiny Yaris (see image) stuffed like a banana pastry with merchandise, the merchants, and everything in between. It was the four of us, Jack, Miche, Grace and I. We were on the road, bound for the great sphincter of the Southern Hemisphere- Canberra.

We left Sydney at 3am, with many troubles. Miche realised they had lost their phone when we were 30 minutes out. It was when we returned to their house that we decided to do a more thorough 'just in case' search. And there it was, wedged under the front seat.

10 minutes 'til opening, we swept past the lake. It was foggy, so the landscape looked unwell. This sentiment was mirrored by one of our passengers, who was turning green in the back seat. Won't name names.

The market breezed by. At this point I was feeling like a big fish, so set-up and pack-down were smooth as.

Not sure if I'd venture to this faraway land again. While I enjoyed the company of all the humble Canberrans, your homeland appauls me. And no, Questacon won't change my mind.

I was very excited to do my first interstate con! To make sure I didn't burst the budget, I did everything for cheap.

Hotel? Backpackers hostel in a 6-person shareroom (I shottied top bunk of course).
Flight? $140 round trip, I'd sniped on Jetstar.
Car? My new friend Jess (melochi) was kind enough to sponsor my parasitism!

I had a great time exploring Melbourne, everything was so brand new, but at the same time- familiar. It was like a reskinned version of Sydney.

I had a great time at the market, this also may have been the first time I did an autograph. (what!) And I'm most proud to say, yes, my Nate cosplay did get recognised in the big '24.

#2 momo art mart: peach beach

marrickville town hall, sydney, australia

This was the market where I decided I'd cracked the code. One thing was going to set me apart this time. The BEST sales tactict ever conjured:

Build high.

And so I clicked connectors, wrestled grids into place; to produce the tallest display I will ever create.

As it happens, this strategy is great for visibility, but stability? Forget about it. This monolith wavered over us the entire day. At some point it gave up and collapsed onto a poor, unsuspecting market-goer. Yikes.

But if you never try, you never know. I think I'll be keeping my displays nice and short from now on though.

This was also the market where I first befriended Miche, who took many a nap on the table.

#1 koko kawaii market

14th december 2023
koko kawaii cafe, sydney, australia

My first ever market! I arrived like 2 hours late, completely covered in sweat (hot) and i hadn't even set up my display EVER.

I made negative money because I kept buying cookies at the cafe. And based on this, you would think this particular venture would be classed a failure. Well, there's more metrics to success than profit. Consider this: friendship!

I met one of my best friends there: jackmoon. I also met one of my favourite customers, someone who visits me at every Sydney event!

I think after it all, the trek through the heavy, 35 degree heat was worth it! Maybe.
